VOICE:
Voice disorders are common in people who use their voice a lot;
public speakers, school teachers and singers are examples. This
disorder must be diagnosed by a physician, generally an E.N.T. (ear,
nose and throat doctor).
The most common voice disorder is vocal nodules. Nodules can be
caused by misusing the voice, high stress, excessive volume, poor
breath support or abnormal pitch of the voice (too high or too low).
Reflux may also be a contributing factor.
Voice therapy focuses on identifying the vocal miss-use and
re-training the person in proper vocal hygiene, breath support and
voice onset. Therapy is generally of short duration and can help
avoid surgery to remove the nodules if successful.
Voice problems are often identified by the patient when they notice
a change in the sound of their voice, (hoarse, harsh, breathy,
squeaky ) that is not associated with a cold.
Voice therapy is also prescribed for patients with laryngectomees
and includes teaching the use of electro-larynxes and use of voice
prosthesis. Children can also have voice disorders which are most
often associated with vocal abuse.
