TONGUE THRUST (OROFACIAL MYOLOGY)
Tongue thrust is the forward thrust of the tongue when at rest and
during speech and swallowing. The lips are usually open at rest, and
the neck or lower jaw is often thrust forward during swallowing.
Formal assessment by a speech pathologist trained in orofacial
myology is necessary to correctly treat the condition. Often, an
orthodontist or dentist will be the first to recognize the
condition.
The literature indicates orofacacial myology occurs in 38% of the
general population. In those seeking orthodontic correction the
incidence is as high as 73%. A lisp (saying "thun" for "sun") is
often associated with tongue thrust.
